Back to School Shopping Tips for Money Conscious Parents

As the calendar turned to August 1st,  the youth of the world started to prepare for their back to school experience.  The excitement of new teachers, new classmates, even new schools is enough to keep the kids up at night.  The thought of all the school supplies that need to be purchased?  Yeah, that’s enough to keep every parent awake at night.

But before you make a further investment in sleeping pills, do some quick planning and you’ll find yourself filling the shopping cart while filling your pockets with savings.

  • Go kidless- Bringing the kids with you will increase the likelihood of impulse buys and things you’ll most likely regret.
  • Stay offline- If you find something online and have enough time to order it, do it. A lot of things are cheaper online then they are in stores.
  • Make a Bid- ebay, amazon and other such sites are great for buying jeans, clothes, shoes and jackets.
  • Stick with the off brands- Big name brands tend to be about 30% more than name generics. So when you can, stick with the generic products.
  • Buy in bulk- Warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam’s offer bulk items that are perfect for a handful of students. Round up family members, neighbors, and friends and go in on purchases together to save.
  • Stock up during special sales- Find special days or weeks where stores are having sales. Then stock up on what you think you will need during that time.
  • Shop with a plan – Most teachers handout a school supply list ont he first day.  If you wait to shop with the list, you’ll reduce the amount of unnecessary purchases you make.
Being frugal and money-conscious during the back-to-school months can be a big challenge.  Your kids always want what’s “cool” and the “cool” items are usually pretty costly.  With a little planning and great parenting, you should be able to find the perfect balance that makes everyone happy!

Ideas for Reusing those Pesky Silica Gel Packets

We’ve all seen them.  We’ve all wondered what they do exactly.  We all know that we should not “eat them.”  We also all know that we should “throw away.”  But did you know that there are a ton of great uses for them?  I personally always threw them away because…well…I really wasn’t sure what else to do with them.

Silica Gel packets 300x225 Ideas for Reusing those Pesky Silica Gel Packets

Recognize these?

But now, thanks to MNN.com, I’ve learned that you can reuse and repurpose them all over the place!  Here are some of their suggestions and recommendations:

  • Put packs in your ammo cans and gun cases/safes to keep dry.
  • Protect personal papers and important documents by putting some gel in a baggie wherever these are stored.
  • Keep with photos to spare them from humidity. Tuck a small envelope in the back of frames to protect even the ones hanging on your walls.
  • Store in camera bags and with film. After snapping photos in cold or wet conditions, silica gel will absorb moisture to keep your lens from fogging or streaking.
  • Leave a couple packs in your tool box to prevent rusting.
  • Use the material to dry flowers.
  • Place with seeds in storage to thwart molding.
  • Stash some in window sills to banish condensation.
  • Dry out electronic items such as cell phones and iPods. Remember after the device has gotten wet, do not turn it back on! Pull out the battery and memory card and put the device in a container filled with several packs. Leave it in there at least overnight.
  • Slow silver tarnishing by using the gel in jewelry boxes and with your silverware.
  • For items in storage, such as cars or anything prone to mildew. Popular Mechanics offers a good suggestion for use in engines of sitting vehicles.
  • Tired of buying big bags of pet food only to have it get soggy? Store your kibble in a bin and tape some silica packs to the bottom of the lid.
  • Cut open the packs and saturate the beads with essential oils to create potpourri.
  • Use in luggage while traveling.
  • Tuck some in your pockets. Hide them in your closet in leather goods such as coats and shoes, and even handbags, to help them survive life in storage.
  • Gather your razor blades and keep in a container with several silica packs to stave off oxidation.
  • Video tape collections will last much longer with these to help keep them dry.
  • Litter is now made with silica. With its fantastic absorption qualities, this litter requires fewer changes and sends less mess to the landfill.
  • Squirrel some away in your car, especially on your dashboard. This will help maintain a clear windshield and leave it less foggy during times of high humidity.
Do any readers have any other uses for them?  This is quite the list, but if you know of any other uses please let me know!

4 Online Resources for the New Age Frugal Type

Online Advertising Saving Money 300x263 4 Online Resources for the New Age Frugal Type

The internet is full of opportunities to save!

If you’re looking to take your frugal, money-saving ways into the 21st century, then these five websites can help you get beyond the coupons and into the real savings!

When it comes to online resources for saving money, most of us know all about Craigslist and Ebay.  They are both great websites that offer buyers and sellers a quick and easy way to buy and sell products directly with a needy audience.  As those two sites continue to be the main go-to’s for frugal types, four more sites have come onto the scene to provide additional means for making and saving cash.

Zilok.com – Zilok has quickly become the ‘Craigslist for renters.’  Whether you want to rent a power drill, a condo, or sports equipment, Zilkoe provides both renters and rentees a way to get the items without the high cost of purchasing it.

SweepstakesAdvantage.com – Claiming to be the largest directory of free-to-enter sweepstakes and contests, SweepstakesAdvantage gives those hopeful, wishful thinkers a way to up the possibilities of winning something!

Mint.com – Maybe the most popular of the four sites, Mint is the ideal site if you’re looking for an in depth view of the way you spend money.  The dashboard is very user-friendly and provides you a way to categorize, budget, and get great insights on how you can reduce your budget and save money.

HeyItsFree.net – With my favorite name of all four, Heyitsfree is the one-stop resource for freebies around the Internet.  They are all 100% free offers that offer a diverse selection of products.  Whether you’re looking for cereal, shampoo, or mp3 credits, HIF is your place for free stuff!

As a frugalisto, I know that the most important factor in saving money is whether or not you actually need the product.  Don’t use these sites to make purchases you normally wouldn’t; however, use them to increase the savings and learn from your spending habits!

How many readers currently use these websites?  Pros and cons? If you have any other frugal websites you’d like to suggest, please let us know!
