Repurpose Your Toothbrush Around the House

Toothbrushes have many uses!

Do you have a drawer full of old toothbrushes?  Don’t toss them out just yet.  They’ve done their dental duty but they can serve you well in other ways!

Use a toothbrush to clean artificial flowers and plants, costume jewelry, combs, shower tracks, crevices between tiles, and around faucets. Also clean computer keyboards, can-opener blades, and around stove burners. And don’t forget the seams on shoes where the leather meets the sole.

Brush your cheese grater
Give the teeth of a cheese grater a good brushing with an old toothbrush before you wash the grater or put it in the dishwasher. This will make it easier to wash and will prevent clogs in your dishwasher drain by getting rid of bits of cheese or any other item you may have grated.

Remove tough stains
Removing a stain can be a pain, especially one that has soaked deep down into soft fibers. To remove those deep stains, try using a soft-bristled nylon toothbrush, dabbing it gently to work in the stain-removing agent (bleach or vinegar, for example) until Read more »

Harness the Sun to Save Money this Summer

Sunlight is powerful, providing both light and heat. Think consciously about how the sun is affecting the temperature inside your home, depending on what time of year it is.

Free Energy!

In the summer, lower your window shades and close your blinds to keep your home cooler. Spend more time in cooler rooms, typically on the north side of the house.
In the winter, open the shades and blinds during the day to let the sun provide heat.  Of course, this assumes your windows are strong and well-sealed.  If not, consider using duct tape to tape up windows and doors that are leaking in cold air.
Use the light to your advantage too. Try to be awake when the sun is up, using natural sunlight instead of artificial lighting as much as possible. Natural light is free.  Light bulbs use electricity. This may mean you need to get up earlier and go to bed earlier.  (Think back to the days before electricity.  People had to time their activities according to the sunlight.)  And of course, remember to turn off the lights and unplug electronics when you leave a room.  It saves electricity and that saves you money on your electric bill.

Old bananas or a new opportunity?

Just because you’re a wildly successful entrepreneur doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy saving money sometimes just for the fun of it.  My friend, Josh W., in Raleigh, NC (http://joshwhiton.com) founder and owner of Transloc, shared two of his favorite tips with me recently.

Do you see the opportunity?

1. Buy ripe bananas at a discount.  The grocery store marks them down when they get old.  In true entrepreneurial form, Josh doesn’t see old bananas, he sees an opportunity!  He takes the aging bananas home and immediately peels and freezes them. He enjoys them later for smoothies or as a delightful frozen treat.  Josh even boasted that he once got about 35 bananas for $2.

Clean good for another use!

2. Re-use your dental floss.  When he said this, I immediately yelled “gross!”, but he came back with “you re-use your toothbrush, don’t you?”  Well, he has a point there.  Josh says he rinses his dental floss and re-uses it until it falls apart.  And he does have very nice teeth, btw.

Save money with these 3 quick substitutes

1.       Wasp Spray or Pepper Spray?
My friend Angela in Pittsburgh says she carries a can of wasp spray instead of pepper spray for safety.  Wasp spray shoots out 20 feet with incredible accuracy, which is much better than pepper spray, and it will temporarily blind your attacker just as well as the pepper spray.

Vitamin E oil can help with the healing of scars, burns and stretch marks.  Many women add it to their facial moisturizer and others use it as a hot oil treatment on their hair.  Betty H, a friend of mine who is recovering from knee surgery, is using it on the nasty scar across her leg.  Vitamin E oil is super expensive, but Betty’s physical therapist told her how to save money – buy the cheapest Vitamin E capsules you can find.  Then, snip off the top of the capsule and pour the oil directly onto your skin.  It’s FAR cheaper than buying Vitamin E oil in a bottle and it works just as well!

3.       Odorless Hand Cream
The Doctors TV Show recently shared a tip for saving money on hand cream.  Instead of buying expensive creams at the cosmetic counter, head to your grocery store and buy shortening (the thick white stuff that comes in a can).  It’s much cheaper and it does the exact same thing – softens the skin, moisturizes dry skin and protects skin from the elements.  An added bonus if you’re sensitive to fragrance is that it’s completely odorless.

Remember the Dollar Store!  You can probably find all of these low-cost substitutes at your local Dollar Store and it will only set you back a dollar.  J
